Transients of the electromagnetically-induced-transparency-enhanced refractive Kerr nonlinearity

چکیده
We report observations of the dynamics of electromagnetically induced transparency EIT in a system when the ground states are Stark shifted. Interactions of this type exhibit large optical nonlinearities called Kerr nonlinearities, and have numerous applications. The EIT Kerr nonlinearity is relatively slow, which is a limiting factor that may make many potential applications impossible. Using rubidium atoms, we observe the dynamics of the EIT Kerr nonlinearity using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer to measure phase modulation of the EIT fields resulting from a pulsed signal beam Stark shifting the ground state energy levels. The rise times and transients agree well with theory.

Transients of the electromagnetically-induced-transparency-enhanced refractive Kerr nonlinearity: Theory
We present a theory describing the transients and rise times of the refractive Kerr nonlinearity which is enhanced using electromagnetically induced transparency EIT . We restrict our analysis to the case of a pulsed signal field with continuous-wave EIT fields, and all fields are well below saturation. These restrictions enable the reduction of an EIT Kerr, four-level, density-matrix equation ...
متن کاملNonlinear optical properties of electromagnetically-induced-transparency medium interacting with two quantized fields
We study linear and nonlinear optical properties of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium interacting with two quantized laser fields for adiabatic EIT case. We show that EIT medium exhibits normal dispersion. Kerr and higher order nonlinear refractive-index coefficients are also calculated in a completely analytical form. It is indicated that EIT medium exhibits giant resonantl...
متن کاملObservations of Autler-Townes spatial splitting of four-wave mixing image
We report the selfand external-dressed AutlerTownes (A-T) splittings of the images of the generated four-wave mixing signal (FWM) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) of probe images in cascade three-level atomic system. Such spatial properties of probe and FWM signals are induced by the enhanced cross-Kerr nonlinearity. We demonstrate the controlled electromagnetically induced sp...

Noise-induced switching caused by fluctuating atomic coherence is experimentally demonstrated in an atomic optical bistable system consisting of three-level atoms in -type configurations confined in an optical ring cavity. The nonlinear phase as a result of enhanced Kerr nonlinearity induced by atomic coherence in the electromagnetically induced transparency system is fluctuating due to the noi...

The Kerr nonlinear index of refraction for rubidium atoms is measured by using an optical ring cavity with and without electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Significant enhancement and inhibition of the Kerr nonlinear index is observed near resonance with EIT. The nonlinear index of refraction is measured as functions of probe and coupling frequency detunings, respectively, with and w...
